ASA develops policy positions intended to support responsible supplement practice, effective oversight, clear rules, informed consumer choice, and lawful competition. Its process combines member operating experience with regulatory, scientific, quality, legal, and public-interest review.
What ASA policy work covers
Federal affairs
ASA monitors federal legislation and policy with material implications for dietary supplements and the organizations that make, distribute, sell, study, or support them. Federal work may include education, comments, testimony, coalition participation, and direct engagement under applicable rules.
State affairs
State proposals can affect ingredients, age restrictions, labeling, retail, product access, environmental obligations, taxes, and business operations. ASA evaluates state-specific context while identifying where consistency can improve compliance and consumer understanding.
Regulatory affairs
ASA tracks agency rulemaking, guidance, enforcement policy, administrative actions, and implementation questions. Regulatory materials distinguish a legal requirement from agency interpretation, an ASA position, and a practical educational resource.
International affairs
Global standards and national rules can affect ingredients, labeling, claims, quality, and trade. ASA’s international work focuses on developments relevant to its mission and members rather than presenting ASA as the authority for every jurisdiction.
How a position is formed
- The issue, jurisdiction, audience, deadline, and decision authority are defined.
- Primary sources and relevant operational evidence are collected.
- Members and subject-matter contributors provide input through a controlled process.
- Conflicts and competition risks are addressed.
- The draft receives the scientific, quality, regulatory, legal, communications, and operational review appropriate to the issue.
- The authorized body adopts, revises, defers, or declines the position.
- A public record identifies the date, status, sources, and current owner when publication is appropriate.
Policy records
ASA distinguishes:
- Policy priorities: the issues on which the association has chosen to concentrate its resources.
- Position statements: ASA’s adopted view on a defined issue.
- Comments and testimony: submissions to a legislature, agency, court, standards body, or other institution.
- Regulatory updates: dated explanations of developments; these do not create an ASA position unless stated.
- Member alerts: operational summaries and action requests available to eligible members.
Every public record should identify its type and status.
Participation and representation
Members can contribute through committees, issue consultations, task forces, and source review. Participation does not guarantee that ASA will adopt a company’s preferred position. ASA considers sector-wide purpose, governing authority, evidence, law, member perspectives, and material public implications.
Current records
The Positions & Comments index is the authoritative public source for ASA’s adopted submissions and position records. A news article or speaker remark should not be treated as an official position unless it links to or clearly identifies one.
