ASA reviews state legislation and regulation that can affect supplement access, labeling, retail, ingredients, environmental obligations, and business operations. State work uses the official text and local context while considering whether coordination across jurisdictions would improve compliance and consumer understanding.
Issues ASA may monitor
- ingredient or product restrictions;
- age-related sale or access measures;
- retail placement and transaction requirements;
- labeling, warnings, and disclosure proposals;
- marketplace and online-seller responsibilities;
- environmental, packaging, and chemical requirements;
- taxes, licensing, and registration affecting supplement commerce;
- state enforcement, attorney-general actions, and agency implementation;
- proposals that overlap or interact with federal requirements.
Monitoring does not mean ASA has adopted a position.
State issue assessment
For each material proposal, ASA should record:
- state and official identifier;
- sponsor, committee, or issuing agency;
- introduced, amended, enacted, effective, or other current status;
- affected products, parties, and transactions;
- stated policy objective and supporting record;
- interaction with federal and other state requirements;
- enforcement authority and penalties;
- operational, consumer, scientific, and competition implications;
- ASA review status and approved position, if any.
The date of the last official-source check appears on time-sensitive records.
State engagement
ASA may submit comments, testimony, educational background, amendments, implementation requests, or coalition letters. Public records identify ASA’s role accurately. When working with a local organization or coalition, ASA states the relationship and does not imply that all participants share every view.
Member issue intake
Members can identify a proposal using the bill or rule number, source link, deadline, affected operations, and available evidence. ASA determines whether the issue fits its priorities and whether it has the capacity and authority to act. Submission does not guarantee an ASA position.
Alerts and action requests
Member alerts state the jurisdiction, official status, deadline, affected audience, requested action, and ASA position. ASA does not ask participants to make false statements, conceal affiliation, or represent a company view as a constituent view.
Follow state policy records
Members with a source-backed, time-sensitive proposal can submit a state issue for review.
